The role of audio content in academic and non-academic engagement: A behaviour study of students in North Indian Universities

Author(s): Indu Negi and Nisha Kapoor

Abstract: In recent years, audio content has emerged as a powerful medium influencing the learning and lifestyle patterns of university students. This study explores the dual role of audio content in both academic and non-academic engagement among students in selected universities in North India. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected from 400 university students through structured questionnaires and focus group discussions. The findings reveal that audio content such as educational podcasts, recorded lectures, audiobooks, and motivational talks significantly supports academic learning, especially in enhancing conceptual understanding and revision efficiency. Simultaneously, non-academic audio content—including music, entertainment podcasts, and storytelling—was found to aid in relaxation, stress management, and socio-cultural awareness. The study highlights key behavioral patterns such as listening frequency, platform preference, and situational usage, and identifies demographic influences like gender and discipline of study on audio engagement. The paper concludes that audio content serves as a versatile tool for holistic student development and recommends integrating audio-based resources more actively into academic curricula and student wellness programs.
