An overview of the menace of fake news

Author(s): Anurag Mishra and Rajesh Shukla

Abstract: Although fake news has existed for a long time, it has become a significant menace in the digital economy. It has exponentially increased with the emergence of newer technologies such as AI and blockchain. Fake news is news which are not correct as it carries misinformation or mal-information or disinformation. Fake news has seen many emerging trends, including the rise of Deepfakes content, misuse of algorithmic amplification, the emergence of decentralised platforms, and the challenge of personalised fake news. Fake news substantially negatively impacts various aspects of life, such as society, economy, elections, health, education, mental health, happiness, and media. Like any other challenge, fake news can also be viewed as a learning opportunity, and there are a few unintended benefits. The menace of fake news needs an effective strategy with proper implementation, regular follow-ups and improvements.
