Dark truths in the digital echo

Author(s): Sreenija Gopagani

Abstract: Online echo chambers have become essential channels for the spread of extremist beliefs and the radicalisation of individuals. These digital environments inherently sustain and amplify prevailing attitudes, rendering them conducive to the emergence and entrenchment of radical ideologies. This abstract examines the crucial function of echo chambers in the radicalisation process, emphasising their capacity to influence identities and intensify extremist information. To mitigate their influence, it is essential to implement initiatives that promote media literacy, critical thinking, and the diversification of exposure to opposing perspectives. Online platforms can also contribute via content moderation rules. Understanding the mechanics of echo chambers is crucial for formulating effective strategies to mitigate the proliferation of extremist beliefs and foster a more inclusive and informed digital dialogue.
