Portrayal of the girl child in Indian media: Case studies and legal perspectives

Author(s): Harekrushna Pradhan

Abstract: The representation of the girl child in Indian media significantly influences societal perceptions and attitudes toward girls, highlighting the need for further studies on these related issues. This paper focuses on the misrepresentation and objectification that frequently occur across various platforms, including newspapers, television serials, films, music videos, advertisements, and digital media. Through a comprehensive review of existing literature and legal frameworks such as the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, the study reveals a stark disconnect between the intended protections offered by these laws and the often harmful narratives perpetuated by the media. The findings indicate that representations of girl children are frequently overshadowed for more ridership, viewership and television rating points. By means of negative portrayal that reinforce harmful stereotypes and objectify their existence. Such depictions can lead to serious consequences, including the normalization of violence against girls and the perpetuation of gender discrimination. Moreover, the sensationalized nature of media portrayals contributes to a culture of fear and mistrust, discouraging positive engagement with girl children in society. To address these issues, the study recommends the establishment of more clear ethical guidelines for media content, strict implementation of existing laws, and appropriate actions against violators, along with increased training for media professionals on child rights. Ultimately, the paper emphasizes the necessity of fostering a media environment that not only respects but also uplifts the dignity and potential of every girl child in India.
